Zoom vs Google Meet

Secure client consultation audit for US law practices by Teddy.

⚔️ STRATEGIC VERDICT

Google Meet is Simpler; Zoom Wins on Integrations and Call Quality.

Google Meet is a great choice for firms that run completely on Google Workspace and want zero-install client video calls. However, Zoom is the clear winner for firms that need professional legal integrations, automated time-tracking, and superior call quality on unstable mobile connections.

1. Browser Simplicity

Google Meet is built from the ground up as a native browser application. There is no software client to download for either the lawyer or the client, making it exceptionally fast to launch. For quick, ad-hoc client check-ins, Google Meet is highly convenient.

Zoom Workplace offers a similar browser-join experience for clients. However, the host (lawyer) still needs the Zoom desktop app installed to access advanced features like whiteboard sharing, breakout rooms, and custom recording pipelines.

2. Call Quality & Compression

Call stability is critical during legal depositions or sensitive discussions. Zoom uses a highly advanced proprietary video codec engine (H.264/SVC) that dynamically scales audio and video streams. Even when clients connect from unstable cellular connections, Zoom prioritises voice clarity and maintains connection stability.

Google Meet relies entirely on standard WebRTC browser streams. While this works beautifully on fast broadband connections, Meet sessions tend to degrade quickly (causing audio latency and pixelation) on weaker client connections.

3. HIPAA Compliance & BAA

For legal practices dealing with healthcare records or medical cases, signing a BAA (Business Associate Agreement) is required. Google Workspace makes signing a BAA straightforward for all business tiers, covering Google Meet natively.

Zoom also signs BAAs and offers HIPAA-compliant meeting rooms, but this capability is restricted to their Business and Enterprise tiers. For solo practitioners on a tight budget, Google Meet is slightly easier to configure for compliance out of the box.

4. Cost & Licensing

Google Meet is included at no extra cost in all Google Workspace plans (starting at $6/mo per user), making it an incredibly affordable choice for firms already hosting their professional email on Gmail.

Zoom Workplace Pro starts at $15.99/mo per user. While more expensive, the direct integrations with legal billing software and the free inclusion of the Zoom AI Companion for automated legal transcriptions easily offset the price difference.
